After attending the South Kingstown budget referendum forum, I am no longer wondering what the motivation of the advocates of the school budget cuts are. Councilman Jim O'Neill stated that he wants all the cuts to come from concessions by the teachers and their unions. This is not about being fiscally conservative. This is not about balancing the budget, it is balanced. This is a calculated and overt attempt to break the will of the teachers union-- and the tax payers of South Kingstown are on the hook for the bill. We will pay $9,700 to hold this referendum so that Mr. O'Neill can have a free platform as he attempts to eviscerate the collective bargaining process and the teachers union. His motivations could not be any more dastardly or divisive.
